Tourists from another country traveling around Italy doing some major shopping can claim a VAT refund for all that was paid for.
Tax-free shops come into the scene by offering tax-free shopping checks, which are a form of direct relief of the VAT paid for.
The checks are presented to customs upon traveling out of Italy and cashed in at any Global Refund Office.
However, tax-free shops must not be confused with duty-free shops.
Duty-free shopping is available only at World Duty Free stores, while tax-free shopping is available at all stores. Tax-free checks are handed over upon inspection of passport.
