When you travel to Greece at any given time, policemen abound in Greece.
Whether they are taking care of illegal entrants, chasing wild goats, rounding up sheep, directing traffic or offering help to standard travel tourists, the Greek policeman is a courteous fellow offering help to anyone who needs it.
When you travel to Greece as a tourist, a policeman is your first stop towards getting information.
In Greece most policemen speak English, unless you travel up in the mountains in which case, gesture-speak will certainly get your message home.

Everywhere you travel in Greece, the telephone number for the police is 100.
You can pick up a phone anywhere in Greece and you dial 100 and 171 for the tourist police.
Dial 199 to report a fire and 166 for an ambulance and the hospitals all over Greece.

There are two travel medical hotlines for foreigners: 210 721 2951 day and 210 729 4301 night for US citizens.
The English language Athens News (published Friday) lists some American and British trained doctors and hospitals in Greece offering travel emergency services.
Most of the larger hotels in Greece can call a doctor for you in an emergency, and embassies will sometimes recommend local doctors.
