However, the most historic event of Cologne’s time came on May 31 1942, during WWII when 1046 bombers completed an air raid on the city, diminishing the city and the population from just under 800,000 people to approximately 75,000 people. The city was in ruins.
Cologne being a major outlet on the Rhine, the population would rise to ½ million people in less than 3 years.
The Rhine is the biggest reason the city has continued to rebuild since 1945 and is prospering today.
